Summary

A winter field under a high, drifting sky. Haystacks stand in a row along the middle distance, their thatched flanks worked in ochre, russet and gold, while a single bare tree rises at the left, its branches picked out in white against the pale air. A band of green holds the horizon; below it the frozen ground is built from short, dry strokes of cream, umber and blue, laid on thickly enough to catch the light across the whole surface. The sky is scumbled in broken white and lavender, more weather than cloud. Painted in 1941, the picture belongs to the years Picabia spent in the South of France during the Occupation, when the most restless and contradictory figure of the European avant-garde — founder-provocateur of Dada, friend of Duchamp, author of the Transparencies — turned to landscape and the figure in a deliberately direct, unfashionable manner. These wartime canvases, long overlooked, are now among the most closely studied parts of his output. His work is held by the Centre Pompidou, the Musée d’Art Moderne de Paris, the Museum of Modern Art and the Tate.
