Brother of Lowell Birge Harrison, Thomas Alexander Harrison studied at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts before going on to study under Jean Léon Gérome and Bastien Lepage at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris. With other American artists including Charles Fromuth, he was drawn to Pont-Aven and was particularly interested in picturesque scenes. He was made Chevalier of the Légion d'Honneur and promoted to Officier in 1909. He became an associate member of the National Academy of Design. He was also a member of the National Society of Arts and Letters, of the Royal Institute of Painters in Oil Colours in London and the Secessionist groups of Berlin and Munich. His work was admired by Marcel Proust.
Harrison showed work in many exhibitions, including those of the Salon des Artistes Français in Paris, where he received an honourable mention in 1885, the Exposition Universelle of 1889, where he won a gold medal, the Royal Academy and Suffolk Street in London and Munich, where he won a second medal in 1891. He received honorary medals in Brussels and Ghent in 1892. In 2003 he was represented at the group exhibition Brittany, Land of Painters ( Bretagne, Terre des Peintres) at the Musée des Beaux-Arts in Vannes (Morbihan), France.
