About this painting

Women washing clothes at the river's edge — kneeling in the shallows, bent over the work, their figures dark against the extraordinary luminosity of the water around them. It is a subject with deep roots in French painting, but what Léon Detroy (1859–1955) does with it here is entirely his own: the whole canvas ablaze with reflected light, the river surface a shifting mosaic of gold, green, amber and violet that almost overwhelms the figures entirely. The palette is the first and lasting impression. Detroy has pushed the colour of reflected light in moving water to its absolute limit — the greens of the forest canopy fragmenting in the river into a hundred different tones, the warm ochres and bronzes of the riverbed showing through, sudden passages of lavender and purple in the shadows. Against this chromatic intensity the figures are painted in broader, darker strokes that give them their solidity and anchor the composition. The handling throughout is rapid and physical — the paint applied with urgency, each stroke committed, nothing tentative or revised. This is the language of a painter who had absorbed Impressionism and Pointillism without being enslaved to either — who used broken colour not as a system but as a direct response to what he was seeing. The subject of women at the riverside appears in his work across several decades and different countries, reflecting his instinct as a traveller for the universal rhythms of rural life. Born in Chinon in 1859, Detroy was one of the defining figures of the École de Crozant alongside Guillaumin and Monet, arriving in the Creuse valley even before Guillaumin and painting the same landscape that George Sand had made famous. A traveller by temperament, he moved between northern Europe, North Africa, Brittany and Provence, bringing the same restless curiosity to every landscape he encountered. He lived to ninety-six, painting until the end. His friends and admirers included Vuillard, Bonnard, Friesz and Anquetin.

    Leon Detroy Biography

    View full artist profile

Léon Detroy was born in Chinon in 1859, to a doctor father and a mother from the Gilles de la Tourette family, thus predisposing him to a life free from pecuniary needs.
He was initiated into painting by his maternal uncle, a collector in Loudun (Vienne) who knew Corot and Courbet. Around 1880 Léon Detroy decided to enter the Academie des Beaux-Arts in Paris but, very quickly, the academicism of his master, Jean-Paul Laurens, tired him and he left the studio. He was then eager for the outdoors and wanted to paint as the impressionists now did.

In 1887 he arrived in the Creuse, even before Armand Guillaumin. He bought a house in Gargilesse and befriended the poet Maurice Rollinat and met and worked alongside Claude Monet. Then, he brought his friends Henri Charrier and Ernest Hareux to the villages of the region. From then on, the artist paced the sunken paths and the banks of the river whether using impressionism, pointillism or fauvism he captured the region. Seeking neither fortune nor recognition, Léon Detroy stayed away from Paris and its Salons, devoting his time to his painting and to his friends of the École de Crozant.

He died in 1955 in the Sarthe.
