| About this Painting | Loiseau painted winter better than almost any of his generation, and this canvas shows why. The whole surface is worked in his characteristic en treillis technique — short, crosshatched strokes laid in opposing directions, building a dense woven fabric that binds sky, branch and water into a single atmospheric field. Nothing is described so much as accumulated. The subject is deliberately unspectacular: a pond glimpsed through a screen of bare trunks, a pale sun dissolving into mist above. Colour does the work. Loiseau builds his winter from lilac, silvered green and cool grey, then anchors the composition with a bank of warm russet along the lower edge — the only heat in an otherwise chilled picture. The water holds fragments of reflected light in broken touches of jade and cream. Painted at Loiseau's mature height, the work was acquired directly from the artist by Galerie Durand-Ruel, Paris, in December 1919. It was subsequently exhibited in the artist's monographic exhibition at Galerie Georges Petit, Paris, in April 1928, no. 38, and later passed through Galerie Allard and the collection of Paul Antebi, Mexico. |
