| About this Painting | La Cavalcade Venue du Large — the cavalcade coming from the open sea — captures the restless energy and joyful colour that made Guy Charon one of the most celebrated French painters of the post-war generation. Born in 1927, Charon moved to Paris in 1951 and developed a style that draws on the Fauvists — vivid, expressive, immediate — while remaining thoroughly his own. His work has been compared to Raoul Dufy, and the comparison is apt: both painters understood that colour is not simply description but feeling. Charon's seascapes carry the same sense of movement and exhilaration as his landscapes. He was not interested in the sea as a static subject — he painted it as it behaves, in motion, full of light and surprise. This work is a fine example of that approach. His paintings and lithographs have been exhibited across France, the United States, Switzerland, Monaco, Japan and beyond, and his work is held in public collections including the Musée d'Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris and the Bibliothèque Nationale. He was the subject of three French film documentaries during his lifetime. |
