About this painting

La Cavalcade Venue du Large — the cavalcade coming from the open sea — captures the restless energy and joyful colour that made Guy Charon one of the most celebrated French painters of the post-war generation. Born in 1927, Charon moved to Paris in 1951 and developed a style that draws on the Fauvists — vivid, expressive, immediate — while remaining thoroughly his own. His work has been compared to Raoul Dufy, and the comparison is apt: both painters understood that colour is not simply description but feeling. Charon's seascapes carry the same sense of movement and exhilaration as his landscapes. He was not interested in the sea as a static subject — he painted it as it behaves, in motion, full of light and surprise. This work is a fine example of that approach. His paintings and lithographs have been exhibited across France, the United States, Switzerland, Monaco, Japan and beyond, and his work is held in public collections including the Musée d'Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris and the Bibliothèque Nationale. He was the subject of three French film documentaries during his lifetime.

    View full artist profile

Guy Charon is a French painter best known for his vibrantly colored landscape paintings and lithographs done in a style reminiscent of Raoul Dufy, a fellow French artist and designer aligned with Fauvism and Modernism. Charon’s works have Fauvist-inspired colors, but are mellowed by the smooth application of paint and rounded shapes and lines. Born on February 4, 1927 in Écueillé, France, he moved to Paris in 1951 and began exhibiting at the Salon de la Nationale des Beaux-Arts and the Salon des Independants. His works are in the collections of the Musée de Saint-Cyrien, the Musée de Petit-Palais in Paris, and the Musée d’Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris, among others. Charon lives and works in Paris, France.
