Summary

The sea fills almost the entire panel, laid in with short divided touches of emerald, pale green, white and blue, warming to lilac and rose along the horizon. Lemmen leaves the bare mahogany exposed between every stroke, so the wood itself works as a colour — a warm russet glowing up through the cold greens, and the source of the picture’s particular light. A sailing boat with cream sails stands offshore at the left, a rowing boat crosses at the right, bathers in blue and red wade in the shallows, and a row of yellow and green bathing huts closes the foreground. One of the series of small panels Lemmen painted at Heyst (this one No.25) — now Heist-aan-Zee, on the West Flanders coast — in the summer of 1891, a sequence that owes much to Seurat’s Normandy seascapes. The closely comparable Heyst n° 13, same year, 12.4 x 21.6 cm, is in the National Gallery of Victoria, Melbourne.
