Maurice François Auguste Courant was a pupil of Ernest Meissonier. He worked mostly by the seaside from Boulogne to Douarnenez, passing, notably, through Honfleur and Concarneau. He also went to England in 1906 and to Belgium and Holland in 1908, 1911 and 1913. His paintings, almost always painted at the water's edge, show great spaces, rendered in small, free strokes, most often in harmonised tones of blues, greys and browns.
He made his début at the Salon de Paris in 1868, receiving a second-place medal in 1887. He regularly exhibited at the Salon de la Société Nationale des Beaux-Arts. He received a silver medal at the Exposition Universelle in 1889 and a bronze medal at that of 1900 in Paris.
