About this painting

A harbour at the quayside — women and children gathered around the catch, a figure carrying a basket, boats moored to the right, trees and stone buildings dissolving into the blue-green atmosphere behind. Henri Darien (1864–1926) has painted this scene in a manner that places him directly within the Neo-Impressionist tradition: the entire surface broken into small, distinct strokes of colour that merge at a viewing distance into a unified, luminous whole. The palette is built on the cool blues, blue-greens and mauves that dominate the scene — the stone of the quay, the water, the walls behind — with the warmer tones of the figures providing the compositional anchors that prevent the whole from dissolving entirely into atmosphere. The foreground child in red and pink is the brightest note in the canvas and is placed with the intelligence of a painter who understood how a single warm accent can organise an otherwise cool composition. The handling throughout has the characteristic mosaic quality of Divisionism: each stroke retaining its identity, the optical mixing happening in the eye rather than on the palette. The work was painted at Yport - one of the fishing harbours that Darien returned to throughout his career after finding his definitive artistic voice on the Norman coast. The scene of women at the quayside, waiting for the boats and sorting the catch, was one he knew from sustained observation rather than passing acquaintance. Born in Normandy in 1864, Darien studied under Jules Lefebvre and Gustave Guillaumet in Paris, where he became a member of the Volnay artistic and literary circle and a regular exhibitor at the Salon des Artistes Français from 1886. He received a bronze medal at the Universal Exhibition of 1900 and was appointed a Knight of the Légion d'Honneur in 1910. His work is held in public collections in France.

    Henri Gaston Darien Biography

    View full artist profile

Henri Darien studied with Jules Lefebvre and Guillemet. He became a member of the Société des Artistes Français in 1886 and exhibited regularly at their Salons, receiving numerous distinctions, notably: an honourable mention in 1889; third-class medal, 1897; Prix de Raigecourt-Goyon, 1897; second-class medal, 1899. His work appeared at the 1900 Exposition Universelle in Paris. He was made a Chevalier of the Légion d'Honneur in 1910.

In his works, he chose a compromise between two contemporary styles: realism and Impressionism. His Auction is a scene featuring highly active real people, painted in a precise style; whereas the port and the transparent effects of the water in the background are obtained by means of small, light, luminous touches.
