Summary

Riders walk their horses along the sandy allée while the promenading crowd gathers on the grass beside it: a woman in white with her parasol raised and her companion in a bowler, set well forward, and behind them a scatter of figures diminishing into the haze beneath the trees. The paint is thin and scrubbed, the canvas weave left open through the sky and the foreground grass, and the figures are built from two or three loaded touches apiece — a red hat, a yellow dress, a dark coat — so that the whole crowd reads as movement rather than description. The key is high and the light diffused, with the greens broken by cream and rose. Spat was born in Kishinev and left Russia in 1911, training in Geneva and then at the Colarossi and the Grande Chaumière in Paris. Though he worked at La Ruche in the circle of Soutine and Modigliani, he took nothing from their expressionism, holding instead to the Impressionist subject of Parisian leisure — the Bois, the racecourse, the bandstand, the beach. He emigrated to New York in 1945 and painted these French park scenes for the rest of his life. Two things to check before this goes out: whether the support is canvas or canvas laid on board, since the ones at this scale are often laid down; and the dimensions, which I’ve left as placeholders.
