| About this Painting | A quiet stretch of river in autumn, the banks softened by the season's fading light. Lépine — one of the most quietly rigorous painters of the Paris river scene — works here with characteristic restraint, building the composition through layered tones of ochre, russet and cool grey-green. The oil on board surface suits his touch well; strokes are considered and economical, never laboured. Signed lower right and dating to around 1910, towards the close of a distinguished career spent observing the waterways in and around Paris. From a private French collection. |
