Summary

The harbour at Antibes seen from the ramparts, its bright confusion of fishing boats and masts dissolving into a pale wash of sea and sky, a tricolore snapping above the quay at the left. Pougny paints thinly and rapidly on board, scumbling and scratching the pigment so the warm ground breathes through, the scene held in a high chalky key of turquoise, ochre and coral. It is a picture about light and air rather than incident — intimate, unforced, wholly of its moment. A founder of the Russian avant-garde who signed the Suprematist manifesto beside Malevich, Pougny settled in France and, from 1940 to 1942, worked at Antibes alongside Robert Delaunay, turning to the tender, Bonnard-like manner seen here. His work is held by the Centre Pompidou, the Musée d'Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris and MoMA, New York.
