Summary

A screen of trees in full autumn colour fills the upper two-thirds of the canvas — gold, apricot and orange, scattered with crimson and rose where the light catches — against a sky of pale blue and cream. The trunks and the shade beneath them run to violet and deep purple, and Fréchon lets those cool notes rise up through the foliage so that the warmth never settles into a single tone. At the left a strip of blue shows between the trees, water or distance. Below, a meadow of long grass is worked in short upward strokes of emerald, lime, yellow and pink, with flicks of lilac and mauve scattered through it. Two red-brown cows stand half-hidden in the grass at the left, their colour the strongest note in the picture and the only thing in it that is not light. The whole canvas is built from short loaded touches laid in the direction of growth — vertical in the meadow, broken and diagonal in the canopy. Nothing is drawn, and there is no outline anywhere. Fréchon was born at Blangy-sur-Bresle and trained from 1879 at the École municipale de peinture et de dessin in Rouen. With Charles Angrand and Joseph Delattre he was among the leading figures of the École de Rouen — successful from the 1890s, but working largely outside the Paris art world. His preoccupation with seasonal effect earned him the name le peintre des saisons.
