Literature: This rare work by Park is one of the only recorded paintings he executed in France. This view depicts the entrance to the harbour at La Rochelle and was painted in 1923 / 1924 - he showed it at the annual St Ives. Show Day in 1924 and likely submitted it to the Royal Academy in the same year.
John Anthony Park studied in Cornwall with Julius Olsson and in Paris at the Académie Colarossi. He served in World War I. In 1933, he was elected member of the Royal Society of British Artists, and he was a member of the Royal Institute of Oil Painters from 1945 to 1958. He lived in St Ives for most of his life and then settled in Brixham in Devon in 1954. He painted primarily scenes of Cornwall and Exmoor. He exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1905. He was elected honorary member of the Salon de Paris in 1923 and won a bronze medal in 1924.
