Biography

Vera Rockline was a student of Alexandra Ekster in Kiev. In 1919 she exhibited at the Union of Russian Painters under the name Shlezinger, in the Exhibition of Jewish Painters and Sculptors, and at the 5th annual national exhibition of Impressionism and Abstraction. She moved to Paris shortly afterwards and settled in the Montparnasse district.

Rockline’s early work shows the influence of Cubism via Alexandra Ekster, but her coloration was more in the manner of Cézanne. She mainly painted female nudes.

She began exhibiting in Paris in 1922 at the Salon des Indépendants, and also exhibited at the Salon d’Automne and the Salon des Tuileries. Rockline was featured in the exhibition Women of Montparnasse (Musée du Montparnasse), which had as its theme the emancipation of women artists in the 1920s and 1930s, and A Russian Summer in Montmartre. St Petersburg Artists in Paris at the Beginning of the 20th Century ( Un été russe à Montmartre. Artistes de St-Pétersbourg à Paris au début du XXe siècle) (Musée de Montmartre, Paris, 2003).
