Biography

Eekman trained in architecture at the Académie de Bruxelles, but gave it up in favour of painting. During World War I he lived in the Netherlands, where he worked on various techniques, specialising in wood engraving. He later moved to Paris where he took part in group exhibitions.

His works were firmly figurative. Early on he was influenced by Surrealism, moving towards Expressionism from 1960 onwards. His style is very distinctive due to the fact that he takes subjects painted by Pieter Brueghel and Hieronymus Bosch and gives them a subtler treatment using blackish-brown tones, perhaps with more detail.
