Biography

Born 19 May 1925, in Marseilles.

Painter, watercolourist. Figures, landscapes with figures, waterscapes.
Based in Lyons, Jean Fusaro studied at the École des Beaux-Arts there for three years and later became a teacher there around 1970. He exhibited at numerous group exhibitions, notably in Paris at the Salon d’Automne and the Salon des Peintres Témoins de leur Temps. He took part in the Menton Biennale in 1951, was awarded the Fénéon prize in 1953 and the Ville de Marseille prize in 1957. His first solo exhibition took place in Lyons in 1947 and was followed by many others, particularly in Lyons and Paris, including a retrospective in 1977 at the Musée Paul Valéry, Sète, an exhibition at the Musée de Melun in 1978 and at Artfrance in Paris in 1984.

Fusaro was an important figure in the Lyons School, together with Cottavoz, Couty and others. His lively and sometimes deliberately naive draughtsmanship is reminiscent of Dufy. He depicts a wide range of scenes in heavily painted landscapes in a very fresh range of colours. His use of pigment is characteristic of the contemporary painters of the Lyons School to which Fusaro brings a joyous interpretation.
