KATE GILBERT (1843-c.1890) Biography

Kate Gilbert was the daughter of Arthur Gilbert and the sister of Horrace Walter Gilbert. She is listed as having an address in Croydon, Surrey. Kate married Humphrey Hughes, a schoolmaster, whom she had known from childhood having lived next door to each other in Barnes. Kate exhibited one work at Suffolk Street in 1885 entitled “Noon in the Essex Marshes”. She also exhibited a painting with the Society of British Artists and other examples are known. These are signed ‘Kate Gilbert’ although most are dated well after her marriage.
