HUGH MUNRO RGI (1873-1928) Biography

Born in Glasgow on 23rd December 1873. A landscape, flower and genre painter and illustrator. He worked for Charles Mackie (1862-1920), preparing and cutting wood-blocks. He married Mabel Victoria Elliot (1885-1960), neice of the Earl of Minto, against opposition from her family on account of his impecuniousness. After Munro's death, she married the Kirkcudbright school painter W S MacGeorge and began to paint watercolours professionally. Among Munro's most sought after works were his sunlit, evocative beach scenes. His flower pieces are often effective, with rich colours and good technique, without being too showy. He also worked as an art critic for The Glasgow Herald.
