ALBERT FERDINAND DUPRAT (1882-1974) Biography
Albert Duprat developed his artistic skills at the École des Beaux-Art in his birth city of Venice. Most of his oeuvre reveals his love of Italy, and particularly Venice. Duprat consistently depicted his Venetian scenes—canals, monuments, and gondolas—as inviting and serene glimpses into the city. Duprat was greatly interested in the effects of light on water, and painted in short, colorful brushstrokes to heighten this effect.
In our painting, Sur le Grand Canal, Venise, Duprat fills the canvas with a soft yellow and blue sky. Similar to Impressionist painters such as Monet, Duprat uses his lively palette to achieve an atmospheric effect. While a gondola glides across the water, the open and airy composition truly shows Venice as part of a larger natural seascape
