JOSEPH THORS RBA (1843-1898) Biography
Joseph Thors is a name that is immediately recognised as one of the leading landscape artists of the Victorian period, and yet very little information is available on this talented and prolific painter in oils of the English rustic landscape.
He firstly lived, worked and exhibited from various addresses in the London area, it is known he travelled to France, and exhibited in the Royal Academy a picture (No. 389), titled “View in Fontainebleau” in 1878. Later, he moved north to Birmingham and as well as rustic scenes he painted rivers and the occasional coastal view. He is now regarded as a Member of the Birmingham School of Painters who flourished in the latter half of the 19th. Century.
Joseph Thors is an artist who for years has inspired the imagination of people who like to dwell for a moment on the rustic charm and even hardship of our Victorian period, it is not surprising that prices for his works have risen considerably and will no doubt continue to do so.
