FRANCIS TOPHAM O.W.S. (1808-1877) Biography
Francis Topham was born in Leeds in 1808, and moved to London around 1830. He began as an engraver befor emoving entirely to watercolour being elected to the N.W.S. 1843 and O.W.S. in 1844.
His most typical subjects are Irish and Spanish peasants - his work is described as being painted with great vigour with the artists adding and removing colour, rubbing out , repainting and the like until he created his finished piece. He was the father of Francis William Warwick Topham.
