JAMES WHITELAW HAMILTON R.S.A. R.S.W. (1860-1932) Biography

Born in Glasgow where he studied before moving to Paris. In 1884 he joined Guthrie, Henry, Crawhall and Melville at Cockburnspath painting landscapes of fishing villages in oil, watercolour and pastel his evening scenes being amongst has finest work. He was closely involved with the Glasgow Boys whose influence took him to Kirkcudbright where be painted harbour scenes with people gathered in groups. For a time his paintings were more appreciated abroad than at home, perhaps due to his winning a prestigious prize in an International Exhibition in Munich in 1897. Latterly he lived in Helensburgh.
